Monday, 7/14/03: Gleaming Today I strolled on down to the AFI Silver wanting to see "The Manchurian Candidate," which was showing at 6:30 pm. I left the apartment, as is my custom for weekday shows, about 10 minutes before showtime, the better not to have to kill time sitting alone in the theater. And there's never a problem getting tix for weekday rep shows. Right? No. "We're all sold out," the young woman in the ticket booth told me, her smile indicating both puzzlement at the circumstance and hope that I would not blame her for a circumstance out of either of our control (the latter being an unfortunate custom among modern assholes). "Awwww!" I said and strode home, not in the mood for either "Cabaret" or "2001" (even though "2001" was in true 70 mm in the main theater). While in general it is good that a rep show of a movie originally released 40 years ago 40 years ago!! on a Monday night can sell out at my local cinematic history dispenser, because it means that people are coming down and up and east and west to downtown Silver Spring to enjoy themselves, in specific it annoys me that I am going to have to start getting to the theater earlier. Oh well. We have begun in medias res with our gentrification narrative, as the index page indicates, which is appropriate enough since that's where we're at now. But this needs some backstory. I will endeavor to provide it soon.
